How I Went from Constantly Overwhelmed to Actually Getting Things Done: Without Doing It Alone

A real-life ADHD body doubling success story

For most of my adult life, I felt like I was always two steps behind.
Dishes piled up. Deadlines haunted me. My to-do list became a source of shame instead of structure.

I wasn’t lazy, and I wasn’t incapable—I was simply overwhelmed. Completely stuck. Every. Single. Day.

If you’re an adult with ADHD, maybe you know that feeling too well.

The Daily Battle with ADHD Paralysis

The overwhelm wasn’t just a phase—it was my norm.
Executive dysfunction hit hard, especially on days when I woke up with every intention to “be productive,” only to find myself frozen on the couch hours later, unsure where to start.

The guilt and shame became part of the routine.

Even basic hygiene felt like a mountain I couldn’t climb. I’d go days without brushing my hair or showering. It wasn’t because I didn’t care—it was because my brain simply couldn’t initiate the steps. And that kind of stuckness is hard to explain… unless you’ve lived it.

The Breaking Point: Realizing I Couldn’t Do It Alone

I used to think I just needed to try harder.
Push through.
Be more disciplined.

But ADHD doesn’t respond to shame and pressure—it responds to understanding, structure, and support.

What finally changed things for me wasn’t a planner, a productivity app, or sheer willpower.

It was community.
It was body doubling.
It was finally not doing it alone.

What Is Body Doubling—And Why Did It Work?

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, body doubling is when you work alongside another person—virtually or in person—not to get help with the task, but just to have someone there while you do it.

Sounds simple, right?

But for neurodivergent brains, it’s transformational.

When I joined ND Hive and started using body doubling sessions and real accountability, everything began to shift.

On the days when I couldn’t even figure out how to begin, I could hop into a session and talk it through with someone. They didn’t judge me for needing help organizing my thoughts. They didn’t look down on me for being “stuck” over something as simple as laundry or sending an email.

They just got it.
And that changed everything.

From Surviving to Thriving

Slowly but surely, I started getting things done.
Not perfectly. Not every single day. But consistently.

Instead of battling my brain, I started working with it.

On the days I was struggling to come up with a plan to tackle the overwhelm, someone was always willing to talk things out with me. They helped me break down tasks so they didn’t feel impossible.

If I was having a day where executive function just wasn’t showing up, we made a plan that worked with my brain, not against it. And most importantly—I was never looked down on for those days.

I went from:

  • Living in constant chaos → to maintaining my home

  • Struggling to get off the couch → to actually moving through tasks

  • Failing at personal care → to reclaiming routines and self-respect

  • Feeling alone with my ADHD → to having a crew of people who understood

  • Surviving as a mom and professional → to showing up fully for my son and my work

This wasn’t just about getting things done—it was about reclaiming myself.

Why Community Support Matters for ADHD Adults

So many of us grow up feeling like we’re “too much” or “not enough.”
We’re taught to mask, to try harder, to keep up in systems that were never built with our brains in mind.

But accountability, body doubling, and community support flip the script.
They say:

“You’re not broken. You’re wired differently. Let’s work with that.”

ND Hive gave me the space to be honest about my struggles, the tools to move through them, and the community to do it alongside.

And that has made all the difference.
